Mumbai Police and Speeding

I read this morning that the Mumbai police is acquired 2 new speed guns at a cost of 11 lakhs each. These are also fitted with an 8 megapixel camera so that you can take a shot of the offending drivers. So now, you would expect them to fine more people who are gonna be caught speeding, right? NO, they say that they are not gonna fine anyone, but they are straightaway going to suspend the license of the person caught speeding.

A bit excessive I say.

To aid the mumbai police in this activity there will also be an RTO official who will issue the suspension on the spot. As if we didnt have enough of it, here is a classic case of Disguised Unemployment. It’s already so rampant in the Govt. sector that its actuall hilarious at times. A few examples that I have seen:

  1. 3 BMC workers opening/closing a water valve.
  2. A peon at every door of the BMC building
  3. A helper behind every official at the passport office in Mumbai.
  4. 3 people at the door of the Marriage Registrar Office to guide you to the right counter/table to sign the documents.

I am sure that you guys could add to this.

Anyway coming back to the original topic, why do these guys have to try and do things differently when there already exists a mechanism to make the best use of their shiny new speedguns. I also read, that the last time that these guys got speed guns, they refused to show the reading to the people they caught for speeding. God only knows whether the spped guns are actually working.

Anyway, these are going to be deployed on the Eastern Express Highway. So be careful guys, there might be a half brained, half trained, half smart, fully corrupt policeman/traffic policeman to stop you and suspend your license.
