Talking while Driving

In most cities in India, it is illegal to talk on your mobile while driving or riding. This law is enforced strictly in some cities, loosely in others and not at all in some. Many states in the USA are now on the way to banning the use of mobile phones while driving (Yes it is legal in most states). Now some states are putting into place a law that will prevent people from using their cell phones while driving unless they use a handsfree device. That is something that we already do in India.

However, research is suggesting that its not the use of the cell phone that is the distraction, its the conversation itself. People carrying on a conversation while driving see 50% less things than people who are not talking. If this were true, then I guess its only prudent to not talk while you are driving. Does this mean that all long drives will be held inside a cone of silence? I dont think so. I think that nobody should talk to the driver, since he/she is the person that you dont want to distract. That should do it I think.
