Reading Now – Dune

I thought that I could put up a few details of the books that I read, when I am reading them.

Currently I am revisiting one of my all time favourite science fiction classics, Dune; by Frank Herbert. I was first exposed to Dune when my Dad brought home the movie when I was in standard 8th or 9th. The movie was a little mature for my young mind but the whole idea of Dune was extremely intriguing to me. The blue in blue eyes were very cool also :-) .

After a few months I realized that the movie was actually an adaptation of the book by Frank Herbert. I was already into reading the usual Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, so I thought what the hell. I got myself the book. I read the whole thing in about 2 months. I like to read slowly, usually taking about 2 months to finish any decent sized novel. I really liked it and tried to get the rest of the series. But no one in town seemed to stock them. There was no internet either, to order online. So, I forgot about Dune and went on with my life reading whatever else I could get my hands on.

During the next few years I read all of Arthur C. Clarke, Issac Asimov and other assorted science fiction writers. It was always difficult to get a hold of science fiction books in India. After marriage my wife introduced me to series like The Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, The Bartameus Trilogy and other such fantasy stories.

Then recently, I got into the mood of starting my own collection of books after being inspired by one of my acquaintances in Goa. That guy had literally hundreds of books at his home. It was nice to see and also made the house look like a home.

Having decided to buy books instead of using a lending library I found a good onlne store to use. LandmarkOnTheNet. Landmark is a chain of book/stationary stores in India. They have a good collection and large stores. I started buying a few books and then saw the Dune series. I immediately bought all 6. I also bought The Hitchhikers Guide; A Trilogy in 4 Parts, hard cover (Kinda looks like the bible), a few Arthur C. Clarke books and a Batman graphic novel. The 6 Dune books (paperback) cost me about Rs. 1400 (about US$31).

So I have started reading the first book of the series, Dune. Its as if the story is so new to me since I am much older and can undersand much more. When I first read this book at the age of 13-14 the amount that I understood was much less. Reading it after 14 years is really different.

So thats the background of this series of posts. I will write more after I finish this book and move to the next one.
