The Icelandic Wastelands

While flying from Paris to Toronto, most people on the plane had gone off to sleep. It was really bright outside and the shades were kept down. So it was only by chance that I saw the map on the screen in front of me. The map showed the plane flying over Iceland.

Having explored Iceland many times (on Goolge Earth), this was something that I had to see. The skies under us were really clear and I was able to get some clear shots of the surface of Iceland. The icy wasteland is haunting and managed to give me goose bumps. Its like the places you see in movies where nothing lives and the kind of places where the worst kind of prisoners and relegated to, to live out the rest of their lives in absolute desolation.

Well, I guess I am getting a little dramatics here. but seeing that icy expanse and the winds blowing over it gives you this feeling of sadness, like all the happiness has been sucked out of you. Oh wait that happens when those other things come and get you right… from that book… oh well.

The image is a little discoloured as the plane’s windows were reflecting the light weirdly. You can take my word for it though that the whole place was as white as a gathering of the KKK.

These are a couple of shots of the winds that were blowing across the surface. From my height it looked like it was blowing in slow motion, but I can just imagine the winds blowing really fast. I am guessing around 70 kmph.

Here are there you could also see a few rivulets running across the landscape. I am guessing that these were larger rivers bu due to the freeze, ony that much was visible on the surface and that there was a lot more water flowing under the surface. Or, I could be wrong and maybe the rivulets were actually rivers and they were just looking so small cause I was so high up…

So when I fly back to India, I will see if things look any different.

  1. It had to be Iceland cause the GPS map showed that. It can’t have been the Sahara because we were no where near Africa since this was after Paris.

Only the first 2 are discoloured because of the Sun reflecting off the snow. The next 2 are fine I think.
