Mumbai Airport Flyover Finally Flying

The people of Mumbai living beyond Vile Parle on the East side of the Western Line, heaved a collective sigh of relief on 26th January 2009. Before this day they used to spend a lot of time waiting on the Western Express Highway while going to work every morning and longer while returning from work in the evening.

On 26th January 2009 (also India’s 61st Republic Day) they were able to not wait and breeze through the busy intersection of the Mumbai Airport. This was thanks to the new flyover(overpass) at that junction that is fully operational now. I saw fully operational because till 26th january only 1 side was being used for both directions of traffic. This had been the case for many many months.

I used that route today to get to a meeting… the lack of a traffic jam was so surprising that for a  minute I thought it was a holiday and I had misread the calendar! But, it was how it was. Not crowded and quite smooth going. The next hurdle for commuters by road is the Bandra area where these people will invariably get stuck for longer now. The volume of traffic that the Airport crossing will let through will be too much for the Bandra junction the Mahim Causeway.

Also, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link also looks to be proceeding for a change and not left static as it used to seem a few months ago.

Is there a toll on the flyover?

No man. No toll. But there’s going to be a hefty toll on the Bandra-Worli sea link.
It seems they are gonna charge a toll of Rs. 100 per car.
