The current season of American Idol boasts some really good talent. The field is down to the final 10 contestants. A few that I really like are Adam Lambert, Megan Joy and Anoop Desai. Anoop Desai is the underdog who has captured the attention of not only the judges but also the rest of America. I am pretty sure that the Indian media will also ultimately catch up on this and realize that he is of Indian descent.
Why am I writing about him? Because after the horrific spectacle that was Sanjaya Malakar in the season before the last one, Anoop Desai is like a breath of fresh air. He sings well takes all the criticism well and improves on his past mistakes. The only thing I don’t see him improving on is his dressing sense. Although Paula Abdul would call that “staying true to himself”, as she rarely has any constructive criticism for any of the contestants, I think that his outfits are a major shortcoming and can be the one thing that can suddenly catapult him to being an entertainer rather than a singer.
Sanjaya Malakar had the outfits right and the hair all wrong and he didn’t have the singing at all. Having watched him die horrible deaths in my mind multiple times, I can safely say that Anoop Dawg! has no reason to provoke such thoughts in my mind. Going by the fact that he appears to be the second most popular Idol in the American Idol forums (after Adam), I know that he should be around for some time since its all about public votes. You also have to remember that the judges still have 1 chance of bringing a voted out Idol back into the show, and Anoop Dawg! has always been one of their favourites.
An interesting fact to note from the posts in the forums is that Anoop is liked for not only the fact that he can sing and looks “cute”, but also because he has a college education (a big thing still, in America). There are posts dedicated to the “college” type words that he uses liberally in his regular conversation and also post that come up with terms based on his name like Randy’s Anoop Dawg! (please note the exclamation mark) to Supermanoop.
What I feel Anoop really needs to fix are his hair and his outfits. Once he does that I will also be part of the Anoop Troop as his fans like to refer to themselves.
