WPtouch – A Mobile Theme for your Blog
With all the fancy phones that are coming out all the time, I think that its a good idea to have a mobile version of your blog also available so that people with mobile devices are able to get the full experience of your website even if they visit through a mobile browser. While the browsers, that are already present in these new devices, are quite capable of showing your blog to the visitor, there is always content on your blog that can’t really be rendered properly. Some elements tend to look out of place and in some cases even bad.
Some time ago while looking for a new theme for my blog, I came across a mobile version of a WordPress theme called Carrington Mobile. I was using this one up till now. Recently I found the WPtouch plugin for WordPress. Carrington Mobile served well as a really clean and clear theme for mobile but it always lacked the customizability that one is used to while working with WordPress. WPtouch on the other hand is really what I should have been using.
WPtouch loads fast and looks good too. There are enough options in the Settings page to keep you happy too and also allow you to experiment with it. You can even customize some of the colours and background elements for the theme. The theme is automatically enabled when you enable the plugin. You can choose your own image for the header logo or choose from the many iPhone type built-in ones. Additional functionality is also provided for Links, Photos and Archives.
The home screen for my blog. Each month gets its own colour for the calendar icons. Number of comments are also displayed prominently.
There is a dropdown that lets you navigate with things like Tags and Categories. There are also links for the site feed and email.
Wherever a list of posts is displayed, like a search or the categories, the display is always colour coded by month. Which I find really nice.
This is what the post looks like. The ad appearing on the page can be configured from the WPtouch options.
Any images in the post are resized perfectly to fit the screen. No more overflow of images while the text fits.
Just under the post you have a few sharing options like email, twitter and bookmark. The comments form is also nice and clean.

I love WPtouch – it makes my blog feel like a real iPhone app and does a great job on all smartphones
I reckon soon they should bundle it in to wordpress by default.

@Chris I agree. I had also used Carrington mobile but that wasn’t as good as WPTouch. I wonder if Carrington has been updated. I will go check.
