  • Carrying Out Batch Actions in digiKam

I have written about digiKam in the past. That was more of an overall review of a great piece of open source software. Recently, I have had the opportunity to use the individual features of digiKam more in detail. One of the features that I use most frequently is “Batch Editing”. Honestly I used to use Phatch for all my batch editing needs until a few weeks ago. However, since the time that I have started using dig...

  • Sony Alpha 300 Sensor Cleaning

For the last couple of months I have had to do a lot of cloning and fixing of most of the day time photos that I have shot due to dust stuck to the sensor of my Sony A300. I spend a lot of time post processing for dust specs removal to otherwise perfectly good images. The reason that I have so much dust on my sensor, is probably because I like to change my lenses a lot, in the field. That's what happens when you...

  • Working on your Holiday Photos with Digikam

This is the holiday season and you expect to take a lot of photographs. If you are not planning on taking a lot of photographs, you are at least planning on taking more photographs than you usually take. Just past the new year you would probably realize that you have a lot of photographs and not so much time to work on them, especially if you are in the “occasional photographer” category. The number of photos that yo...

  • Starting my own Photo 365

Update: The photo blog is up and running!!! You can visit it here or use the menu on the top of the page to go to the Photo Blog. The concept is slightly changed though. It's no longer a 365 type of project, rather more of a One Photo a Day kind of project. The time is now ripe for me to commit to a project that will require me to take one photo every day for the next 365 days. Today is the 31st of December 2009...

  • Review: Kata DR 467i Camera Laptop Backpack

I had been itching to get my hands on a comfortable backpack that could accommodate my camera with the additional lenses, cables and other stuff that I like to carry on me with my camera, in addition to a standard 14 or 15 inch laptop. I researched on the internet for the right bag for quite some time. I really didn’t want to go overboard with this selection since I don’t plan to increase my camera gear by any sub...

Review: Minty Freshness with Linux Mint

Jan 24th

Ever since I installed Intrepid on the laptop, I felt that everything had slowed down. Maybe it was because it was an online upgrade and not a fresh install. There were also small glitches that kept bugging me. Things like unclean shut downs and startups and losing wifi connection every now and then.

So, when I happened to come upon Linux Mint based on Intrepid, I thought this was a good chance for me to switch my flavour of Linux but not go too far away. Linux Mint also looks a lot nicer and since I like to work on a More >

The Great Pictionary Post

Pictionary is a game in which you move around a board on the basis of your luck and also your skill in being able to draw to convey words and phrases to your team mates. Since everyone involved has varying degrees of skill in terms of drawing, the results can be decidedly funny to observe. It is also a good chance to see how differently 2 people see the same thing. This is a collection of drawings from a Pictionary game that I was part of. Before you look at the answers, see if you can guess what the person More >

Ontario Science Centre

I am a big science buff. I love watching both good and bad science. The speculative science that just wants to see something bad happen to the world and also the real science being made by real nerds. Science is fun. I watch a lot of shows on Discovery and National Geographic and I follow all the leading scientific/technological blogs.

Since I like science so much, the Ontario Science Centre (OSC) was a big disappointment. There were very few moments where I found myself looking on in awe at something and even less places when I ended up reading the placards More >

The Royal Ontario Museum

I hadn’t been to a Museum in a really long time. The last one I had been to was on an island in the middle of the reservoir of a Dam! Yes it was! The island used to be the top of a hill! Yes!

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) had no such characteristics. It is in the middle of the city, has a very modern design and it is much bigger than the one on the island. Approaching the ROM without preparation can give you a headache. The outer walls are at weird angles that force you mind to bend More >

CN Tower

Roaming around in Toronto is made a lot easier because of the City Pass. This basically gives you access to 6 or so places frequented by most visitors to the city and at quite a discount compared to if you had to go to each of the places separately. The problem is that you need to cover all these places in 9 days! Thats really not my kind of thing. Its too rushed, in my opinion.

The city pass lets you see:

  1. The CN Tower
  2. Casa Loma
  3. The Royal Ontario Museum
  4. The Hockey Hall of Fame
  5. The Ontario Science Centre
  6. The Toronto Zoo

Photography Project No. 2: Light Writing

Writing words with light turned out to be simpler than I thought. All it took was a dark room a 10 second shutter and aperture at f5.3. Check out my first practice shots below.

The light is from the LED flash of a mobile phone.

An Actual Word

I plan to improve upon this and experiment more with colours and different exposures.

This is a set of shots that I have taken while going through a tutorial on Depth of Field. These are my first practice shots with a Bamboo plant and a fake flower. When I get a chance and a willing model, I will do some portraits also. The next couple of shots are with the fake blue flower.

So these were the first experiments with DOF. Like I said earlier, next I will try to get a few nice portrait shots.

Casa Loma

What does a city get when a rich guy goes bankrupt?

The city gets all the rich guys things!

The story of Casa Loma is the story of Sir Henry Pellatt and his business ingenuity. He is said to have been really good at what he did and over achieved at every thing he did. He was the first to supply the city of Toronto gas powered lighting for streets and basically made his fortune from that endeavour. He also dabbled in many other businesses and made money in all of them.

In 1911 he decided to build a lavish home for himself More >
